A Neuhaus House

A Neuhaus House

This stunning Mid-Century Modern residence was designed by Houston’s pre-eminent mid-20th- century architect, Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr. Positioned on an elevated lot and poised above a circular drive, the home presents an inviting courtyard entrance anchored by tall louvered wooden gates. Double glass front doors open into the very large, open foyer, a glass-walled, perpendicular rectangle. A lovely interior architectural vista extends from the foyer, through perfectly-aligned doorways, across the formal living room into the dining room, illuminated by diffused natural light from a screened skylight.

Enormous, light-filled, exquisitely proportioned rooms have soaring ceilings and are surrounded by full-height glass windows and patio views. A long mirrored wall seems to enlarge the living room, and reflects the fireplace and two sets of tall glass doors to the gardens. Not immediately noticeable, a door within the mirrors grants quick access to the butler’s pantry, wet bar, kitchen, and service areas, a refined floor plan ideally tailored for both sophisticated entertaining and daily living. The brick-walled dining room offers an equally arresting reverse vista across the living room through the foyer and out into the courtyard. Adjoining the dining room, an intimate library/sitting room provides a wall of recessed bookshelves above cabinets, tongue-and-groove paneling, and glass doors with disappearing pocket screens.

Informal and service areas include a galley butler’s pantry and wet bar; a kitchen with sleek cabinetry,  warming drawers, a huge pantry, and a built-in work station; and a charming sunny breakfast room with a built-in display cabinet and a convenient pass-through window into the adjoining kitchen. Also located near the kitchen is a room with a full bathroom that would serve well as an exercise room or staff bedroom.

The master suite occupies its own wing and incorporates a walk-in closet and two separate spacious dressing areas and bathrooms. One dressing area includes a floating vanity table with marble surface, a framed mirrored wall, and two walls of wardrobes for clothes and shoes. The immaculate white-tiled bathroom has a floating sink cabinet and a wall of opaque glass that resembles an abstract painting. The second dressing area offers a wall of wardrobes, a mirrored wall, and an adjacent tiled bathroom.

The bedrooms on the second floor are en suite with pristine white tiled bathrooms, floating sink cabinets, and double closets. The bedrooms are joined by a sitting room/study hub with built-in desk, bookshelves and wardrobes which would serve nicely as an additional bedroom, den or nursery.
